A piano tuner discovers an impossible key — and the sound it makes is not a sound at all.

Ruth Nakamura has tuned six thousand pianos in thirty-five years. But the Steinway at Blackthorn Conservatory is different. Behind the key slip, hidden beyond the highest C, waits an eighty-ninth key — carved from ebony, strung with something grey and oily, and wrapped in leather that wasn't leather.
