What the Bees Remembered

Genre: Folk Horror / Psychological Horror | Words: 1,320 words | Date: May 27, 2026

Esther Vance had kept bees for thirty-two years, and in all that time, she had never once been afraid of the honey.

That changed on the third Tuesday of October, when she cracked open a frame from Hive Four and found the comb filled with something darker than amber — nearly black at the center, bleeding outward into a deep, bruised purple. The bees moved sluggishly across it, drunk and unhurried, as though they'd been feeding on something that had slowed the world down. Esther lifted the frame to her nose and inhaled. It didn't smell wrong. It smelled like honey, but honey with something underneath it, something damp and mineral, like the soil beneath a rotted log. She set the frame down on her workbench, wiped her hands on her apron, and told herself it was a bad nectar source. Goldenrod blooming late. Asters gone strange in the unseasonable warmth. It happened.

She tasted it anyway.
