Dr. Iris Okonkwo has spent eleven years listening to the universe at the Very Large Array. She knows the sound of nothing better than her own heartbeat.

Then a signal appears. Not from space. Not from satellites. It's coming from four hundred miles beneath the Earth's surface — a structured transmission buried in the noise floor, singing in a voice the size of a continent.

When she responds, it responds back.

And it has been waiting for two and a half million years for someone exactly like her.
